Epigenetics – “Epi-“means on or above in Greek,and “epigenetic”. Epigenetics means how cells control gene activity without changing the DNA sequence. Epigenetic changes make modification in DNA that regulate whether genes are turned on or off. These modifications are attached to DNA and do not change the sequence of DNA. It influence the production of proteins in cells. Environmental influences, such as a person’s diet and pollutants impact the epigenome and in some cases, can be inherited through the generations. A common type of epigenetic modification is called DNA methylation. DNA methylation is mediated by DNA-methyl transferase (DNMT), DNMT1 which preserves pre-existing pattern of methylation after cell replication, and DNMT3A/B, “de novo” DNMT, which methylate previously unmethylated DNA. Histone modifications are of acetylation, methylation and phosphorylation. The acetylation of histones is mediated by histone acetyltransferases (HATs) and histone deacetyltransferases (HDACs), The accumulated evidence indicates that many genes, diseases are part of the epigenetics picture.
