Autophagy – “self-eating”, it is an intracellular degradation process that allows cells to recycle the damaged intracellular components to generate energy and help to make new cellular structure. Autophagy acts as a housekeeping mechanism to make sure that the damaged organelles and proteins are regularly digested and cleared from the cell. It is upregulated due to  metabolic stressors like nutrient deprivation, oxidative stress, or DNA damage), In addition, autophagic activity contributes to the mobilization of cellular energy stores, like glucose, nucleic acids and amino acid, which can then become available for energy production. 

Autophagy signal transduction are regulated by autophagy-related genes/proteins. There are few different non-ATG proteins are involved in the regulation and process of autophagy, e.g., mTOR, AMPK, AKT, AMBRA1, BCL2, DFCP1, or VPS34. In recent years, defects in autophagy related genes have been associated with several disorders like cancer neurodegeneration, aging or immunity.
