Apoptosis

Apoptosis is a natural biological process of programmed cell death in which the cells destroy themselves for maintaining the smooth functioning of the body. There are two types Apoptosis and Necrosis and these occur under different circumstances and involve different pathways. This process removes those cells from the organisms that should no longer be a part of the organism.

There are two pathways of apoptosis the one is intrinsic pathway, also called the Bcl-2-regulated or mitochondrial pathway, is activated by viral infection and DNA damage and is controlled by the BCL-2 family of proteins. The second pathway is extrinsic or death-receptor pathway which is triggered by ligation of death receptors such as Fas or TNF receptor-1 (TNFR1)) which can facilitated through capase-8 and Fas-associated death domain (FADD; also known as MORT1) on the cell surface. This recruitment activates the caspases, such as caspase-3, 6 or 7.
